Mobility Scooter

Motor Scooter which is relatively similar to Mobility Scooter
Mobility scooters are designed specifically for people of old age but also for people who have conditions that make them unable to walk, whether that be for a temporary amount of time or indefinitely.

What is a Mobility Scooter?
A mobility scooter almost takes on the same form as a normal electric scooter but where speed is the main focus of an electric scooter, functionality and comfortability are the main focus for mobility scooters. This can be seen as a way of catering to the most common users, the elderly and disabled.

How does it work?
The way this vehicle works is very similar to how a car or any 4 wheeled vehicle would function; to achieve motion the back wheels of the mobility scooter receive energy from the DC motor while the front wheels are connected to the handles of the scooter to enable left and right turning. On the other hand, there are gasoline powered scooters but the vast majority are electric powered. Other optional features that are sought after are the ability to fold the scooter, enabling easy storage or a conveniently placed basket at the front for shopping.

Who invented it?
In 1968, a man named Alan Thieme had a family member who was affected by multiple sclerosis, a disease of the nerve system. The affected family member would’ve possibly experienced many symptoms including fatigue, making it hard to do anything physical for large amounts of time. It was this situation that gave Alan an opportunity to design and create something that would aid his relative and make his life a lot easier. He created a simple three-wheeled motorized cart.

How much does it cost?
Because of the high cost of manufacturing the vehicles they can easily be seen as a luxury item for the wealthy but public places such as malls and even Disney World offer these for free to people who require them.

What is the impact of it?
The mobility scooter has made quite a significant impact for people whose lives had been ultimately ‘interrupted’ by disease, physical impairments or old age. For the people affected by these issues the mobility scooter has helped many of them to gain a sense of independence and become less of a burden for family members and/or caregivers.
